OLDEST ANCESTOR – GEORGE GODDARD (Immigrant 1673)

Born: England c.1650s. Died: unknown, Somerset County, Maryland. Burial: unknown, likely Maryland. Married: Judith Goodin on 14 July 1679 by William Brereton, J.P. Occupation: Planter.

Possible English Origin: Based on the Goddard surname distribution, George Goddard likely came from Wiltshire, specifically the villages of Urchfont, Devizes, or Swindon, or from Berkshire (Wokingham, Reading area). The Goddard name is most concentrated in Wiltshire, with records dating to the Domesday Book (1086) showing "Godehard" as a landowner in the region. Other possibilities include Hampshire (Winchester, Upham) where a Goddard manor house stood from 1530.

Royal & Noble Ancestry: The Goddard family has documented connections to English nobility. According to Dwight Goddard's 1912 genealogy, the family held a manor house in Upham, Wiltshire built in 1530, with land holdings dating to 1233. The Goddard name appears in the Domesday Book as "Godehard" – a land-owning family in Wiltshire and Berkshire. Some branches intermarried with the Hungerford, Popham, and Seymour families – the Seymours were connected to King Henry VIII's third wife, Jane Seymour. Sir Thomas Goddard (c.1580) was knighted by King James I. The Goddard family also has documented connections to the Earls of Berkshire and the Duke of Somerset through marriage alliances in the 16th and 17th centuries. While our immigrant George Goddard (1673) may not be directly traced to the titled branch, the surname shares this noble heritage. Possible connections to the Plantagenet line exist through intermarriage with the Seymour family, who descend from Edward III.

Land: In November 1674, George Goddard proved his right to 50 acres of land in Somerset County, Maryland (now part of Delaware) for transporting himself into the province. This is the first Goddard land grant in America.

Children: William (b. 1680), Jane (b. 1681), John (b. 10 May 1683), Mary (b. 1686), Thomas (b. 1687), Judith (b. 1692).

🍎 JOHN GODDARD'S APPLE

Away back in the olden days

Two little boys fixed their gaze
On a ship that would cross the ocean wide
To carry them on to the other side.

For a planter, (he was a very wise guy)
Had arranged with their step-mother to buy
A passage for them that to him would yield
Forced labor for his cotton field.

From English soil to American clay
Two "bound-out" boys thus made their way;
When parted, as of age they grew
Each of the other no further knew.

But pushing along the Buffalo Trail
With a spirit that would not falter or fail
John, with his apples, came to bless
The land he would carve from the wilderness.

Near the old trail he lived and died
With Mary McTier, his French girl bride;
There he counseled his children: Be true and brave,
But never oh never own a slave.

For by an owner, his will had been bent
And John Goddard knew what slavery meant.

Wherever a Goddard broke the sod
There a church was erected for worship to God.
And when did their churches to slavery sway
John Goddard's offspring moved away.

But when his descendants packed up and left
The homes they deserted were not bereft
For by their foresight, and by God's grace
The Goddard apple still marks each place.

1740-1870 John Goddard, wife Mary McTier
They have their apples at Goddard, Ky.

📌 NOTES:

  • This song/poem was found in the Goddard family papers (file: Bud_s Old Pics 041.docx)
  • It refers to the family tradition of John Goddard (c.1740) and his brother Joseph being "bound out" to Virginia by their stepmother so she could inherit the estate in England
  • "Mary McTier" was John Goddard's wife from Fauquier County, Virginia
  • The "Buffalo Trail" refers to the Great Buffalo Trail/Great Warrior's Path used by Native Americans and early settlers
  • The song highlights the family's anti-slavery stance, which caused Jesse Goddard (1789–1857) to move his family to Ohio
  • "Goddard, Ky" refers to the community of Goddard in Fleming County, Kentucky, where Joseph Goddard built a home and Methodist chapel
  • Original document had minor typographical quirks corrected here ("3e true" → "Be true", "decendants" → "descendants", "there" → "their", "By" → "Ky")

📜 Letter from Eva (Goddard) Kocher to Alice (Goddard) Henthorn

Date: August 1975

From: Eva (Goddard) Kocher · To: Alice (Goddard) Henthorn

I have information from Pennsylvania about a land grant of 400 acres on Mill Creek-Don't know where that is, then 200 acres on Whetstone to Joseph Goddard in 1791 and 165 acres to a John Goddard on Mid Island Creek in 1795. Don't know anything about them.My father, John Will Goddard was born 1857.My father mentioned many times about a Jarret Goddard who was married to Henry Garner's sister. Lived not far from where we lived. Jarret gave his 400 acres to Henry Garner for a horse and left. Didn't come back for 30 years then married his wife over again. My dad didn't know who he was. That was back in the early 1800's. Henry Garner got 4000 acres one way or another. This was from Dad's land out where grandfather Cozart's land was, near Proctor. They got a lot of gas wells and it was called the Garner Oil Field. There is very little we know except for the ones that came down from Pennsylvania. I remember hearing dad speak about Apple Seed John. Great Grandfather, Joshua had an apple orchard near our house; then Grandfather had one at his house, then dad put an orchard the first few years after he was married. He had a good orchard. The apples were so good. I don't know where all those trees came from. I just never thought anything about it. Someone must have peddled them but I don't know from where.Alice said that dad said both his grandmothers were named Yoho but they were not related. Aunt Eva's grandmother was a Yoho, too. That is - granddad Goddard's mother and dad's mother's mother were Yohos.

Date: 21 June 1982

From: Myrna Goddard · To: Evaline Goddard

June 21, 1982Dear Evaline:I am writing to ask for your help with the Goddard family history work I am doing.I have been working for several years putting the Goddard's together family by family. I would very much like to include you and yours in my work.I am attaching a list of questions for you to complete and return to me. Because I know you live with your son I will also include a list for him and his family. With postage what it is I might as well save where I can.I would like to ask one more thing of you. I spoke with John and he was kind enough to give me a bit of info on the others in John and Amanda's family but I could always use more. What I really need are contacts. I have just about finished Dessa Lou's family. I am trying to contact Goldie Cecil from Friend's family.I dearly need help with James Francis, Russell, Harry. What I will do is fill out one of my forms for John and Amanda. Please go over this form and make any corrections necessary. Then on the back give me the name and address of anyone you can think of that might help me with the other families. If you have a name and town I can most always get an address thru a phone call. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.I would like to thank you for your time and for sharing so much with me.Sincerely, Myrna Goddard
